What is myopia control?
Myopia control is treatment designed to slow down the progression of nearsightedness in children. It does not make your child's current prescription go away, but it may help slow the growth of the eye and reduce the chances of developing high myopia.
What age should my child start myopia control?
There is no single age that works for every child. In general, the earlier we identify progressive myopia, the more opportunity we may have to slow its progression. Many children experience faster changes at younger ages, but older children and teenagers may still benefit if their prescription continues to change.
Does myopia control make my child's prescription better?
No. Myopia control is intended to slow progression, not reverse the nearsightedness your child already has. Your child will still need the appropriate glasses or contact lens prescription to see clearly.
Which myopia control treatment is best?
That depends on your child's age, prescription, eye health, lifestyle, and how well they can follow the treatment plan. We offer several options, including myopia control glasses, daily disposable contact lenses, atropine eye drops, and ortho-k. We will discuss the benefits and limitations of each option during your child's consultation.
Are myopia control contact lenses safe for children?
Myopia control contact lenses can be an option for appropriately selected children when they are fitted, worn, and cared for correctly. Daily disposable lenses and ortho-k have different risks and care requirements.
How much does myopia control cost?
At Eyecare Redefined, most of our myopia control programs cost approximately $1,500, while the Stellest spectacle lens program costs approximately $750. Some options, including MiSight and certain ortho-k services, may have additional costs. We will review the pricing and what is included before starting treatment.
Can myopia control prevent blindness?
Myopia control is not a guarantee against blindness or future eye disease. However, slowing excessive eye growth may reduce the likelihood of developing high myopia, which is associated with an increased risk of certain vision-threatening conditions like Glucoma, cataract, retinal detachments, Myopic Maculopathy. Regular eye examinations remain important throughout life.
